Gyula Várnai and Eike Berg met on the occasion of a joint exhibition at the Stúdió Gallery in Budapest in 1993. Since then, they have been in close contact and have carried out numerous joint projects. Várnai represented Hungary at the Venice Biennale in 2017. In their work, both artists deal with the interface between technology, science, art and perception.
The art historian László Százados has been working at the Hungarian National Gallery since 1988 and has since made a name for himself as a curator of numerous exhibitions. The focus of the joint discussion will be a look back at the development of the Hungarian art scene after the fall of communism in the 1990s, the artistic positions and the significance of media art today.

Gyula Várnai’s influential practice is associated with a group of Hungarian neoconceptual artists who came to prominence in the 1990s. Known widely for his large scale installations, Várnai’s interest in mathematics and physics informs much of his practice. Várnai’s works navigate along the fine line between the artistic and the quotidian, using everyday materials to create striking assemblages. His work has been shown widely in exhibitions across Europe and the United States. Várnai represented Hungary at the Venice Biennale in 2017. Recent solo and group exhibitions have been held in Budapest, Paris, Istanbul, and Cologne.

At the core of Eike Berg’s works is the question of the organization and nature of human knowledge and perception. His works navigate around these semantic centers with varying conceptual approaches and different genres, including video, installation, photography, computer art, and light art. His works share a focus on the element of change, usually examining on notions of the borderline or transgressions of borders: space and time, reality and abstraction.
